How Photo-Eye Sensors Work
Each sensor system consists of two units: a transmitter (the sensor with a steady indicator light, usually amber/yellow) and a receiver (the sensor with an indicator light that only stays solid when it’s receiving the beam, usually green).
The transmitter emits a continuous beam of infrared light — invisible to the human eye — directly across the door opening to the receiver. As long as the beam is uninterrupted, the receiver’s indicator light is steady and the door is allowed to close.
If anything breaks the beam — a person walking through, a pet, a toy, or debris — the receiver light blinks or goes out, and the opener’s control board receives a signal to either stop and reverse the door (if it was closing) or refuse to close (if you try to close it with an obstruction present).

The most common sensor problem. The transmitter and receiver must face each other precisely for the beam to travel cleanly from one to the other. Over time — and especially in Arizona where thermal expansion and contraction is extreme — sensor brackets can shift out of alignment.
Symptoms: The receiving sensor’s light blinks or is out. The door opens normally but won’t close via remote or wall button (only closes with the wall button held down, which bypasses the sensor on many models).

The sensor lenses are small glass or plastic windows that the infrared beam passes through. In Arizona’s dusty environment, these lenses collect dust, pollen, and spider webs rapidly.
Symptoms: Same as misalignment — intermittent failure, door won’t close, or erratic reversal behavior.
3. Direct Sunlight Interference
In certain seasons and at specific times of day, direct sunlight can shine into the garage at the same angle as the sensor beam. Intense direct sunlight can overwhelm the receiver’s ability to distinguish the transmitter’s beam from background light, causing the receiver to stop detecting the beam even though the sensors are aligned.
Symptoms: Sensor problems that occur only at specific times of day (typically late afternoon in winter) or when the sun is at a particular angle. Door works fine at other times.
Fix: Install a sun shade or visor on the receiving sensor. Small cardboard or foam shades can be taped to the side of the sensor bracket to block direct sun without interfering with the beam path.
4. Damaged Wiring
The sensors connect to the opener motor unit via low-voltage wiring that runs along the door tracks. This wiring can be damaged by: accidental cuts, rodent chewing, staple damage during installation, or normal wear over time.
Symptoms: One sensor’s indicator light is completely off, not blinking — just dead. Or intermittent failures without an apparent cause.
Fix: Inspect the wiring from the sensor to the motor unit. Look for breaks, fraying, or damaged sections. Splice and reconnect damaged wire with wire nuts, or replace the entire run.
5. Faulty Sensor Unit
Less common, but sensors can fail internally. If all other causes have been ruled out and the sensor still doesn’t produce a steady light, the sensor itself may be defective.
Fix: Replace the sensor. Sensors are typically sold as a pair ($20–$40) and are model-specific. LiftMaster, Chamberlain, and Genie sensors are the most commonly available replacements.
Step-by-Step Sensor Troubleshooting
Step 1: Identify the symptoms. Note which sensor’s light is blinking or off. The blinking or off light is always the receiver (usually green). If the transmitter (amber) is blinking, the issue is with that sensor’s wiring or unit.
Step 2: Clean both lenses. Wipe both sensor lenses with a dry cloth. Even if alignment appears correct, dirty lenses are a common cause. Test the door after cleaning.
Step 3: Check for obstructions. Visually inspect the space between the two sensors. Even a small object (pebble, leaf, toy) between them will prevent the beam from reaching the receiver.
Step 4: Check and adjust alignment. Loosen the wing nut on the sensor bracket (don’t remove it — just loosen enough to allow the sensor to pivot). Slowly adjust the sensor angle while watching the receiver indicator light. When the indicator goes from blinking to solid, the beam is aligned. Re-tighten the wing nut firmly without moving the sensor.
Step 5: Inspect wiring. Trace the wiring from both sensors to the motor unit. Look for visible damage, pinching, staple penetration through the wire, or loose terminal connections at the motor unit. The sensor wires connect to terminals labeled “white” and “white/white” (or similar) on the opener’s terminal strip.
Step 6: Test without sunlight. If the problem occurs at specific times of day, test during early morning or evening. If the sensors work fine at those times, direct sunlight is the cause — install a sun shade.
Step 7: Replace the sensor pair. If all else fails, replace both sensors as a matched pair. Ensure you purchase the correct sensors for your opener brand and model.
Safety Sensor Bypass Warning
Some homeowners, frustrated with recurring sensor problems, attempt to bypass the sensors by shorting the terminals or disabling them. This is extremely dangerous — the auto-reverse safety feature the sensors enable has prevented countless injuries and deaths since becoming mandatory in 1993. Never bypass or disable safety sensors. Fix the underlying problem instead.
