What Is the myQ App?

The myQ app by LiftMaster lets you monitor and control your garage door from anywhere using your smartphone. You can open and close the door remotely, receive real-time alerts when the door is opened, set schedules for automatic closing, and grant guest access — all from the myQ app available on iOS and Android. The app works with all LiftMaster openers manufactured after 2012 that feature built-in Wi-Fi, and with older openers when paired with a myQ Smart Garage Hub (model 819LMB).

Requirements Before You Start

  • A LiftMaster garage door opener with built-in Wi-Fi (Security+ 2.0 or 3.0 models) or a myQ Smart Garage Hub for older openers.
  • A 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network (myQ does not support 5 GHz networks).
  • A smartphone running iOS 14+ or Android 8.0+.
  • The Wi-Fi signal must reach your garage. If your router is far from the garage, consider a Wi-Fi range extender.

Step 1: Download the myQ App

Search for “myQ” in the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. Download and install the app. Create a myQ account using your email address, or sign in if you already have one.

Step 2: Add Your Opener to the App

Open the myQ app and tap the “+” icon to add a new device. Select “Garage Door Opener” from the device list. The app will ask for your opener’s serial number, which is printed on a label on the back or side of the motor unit. Enter the serial number or scan the QR code on the label.

Step 3: Connect to Wi-Fi

The app will prompt you to put the opener into pairing mode. On most LiftMaster models, press and hold the Wi-Fi button (marked with a signal icon) on the side of the opener until the blue LED begins flashing. On the 87504 Secure View and similar models, the Wi-Fi button is on the back panel. The app will detect the opener’s temporary Wi-Fi network — connect to it when prompted, then select your home Wi-Fi network and enter the password.

Step 4: Name Your Door and Test

Assign a name to the door (e.g., “Main Garage” or “Left Bay”) for easy identification. The app will run a test open and close cycle. Confirm the door moved correctly. You should receive a push notification confirming the door opened and closed.

Pairing a myQ Smart Garage Hub (Older Openers)

If your opener does not have built-in Wi-Fi, the myQ Smart Garage Hub (model 819LMB, approximately $30 – $50) adds smart functionality. Mount the hub to the ceiling within range of both your Wi-Fi router and the opener. Attach the included door sensor to the top panel of the garage door. In the myQ app, select “Hub” instead of “Opener” during setup and follow the same Wi-Fi pairing steps. The hub communicates with the opener via the door sensor and a wired connection to the opener’s terminals.

Troubleshooting Common Setup Issues

  • Opener not found during pairing: Confirm you are on a 2.4 GHz network (not 5 GHz). Move your phone closer to the opener. Power-cycle the opener by unplugging for 30 seconds.
  • Wi-Fi connection drops: The opener may be too far from the router. Add a Wi-Fi extender in or near the garage. Metal garage doors and concrete walls weaken Wi-Fi signals.
  • Push notifications not working: Check that notifications are enabled for the myQ app in your phone’s settings. Ensure the app is not being killed by battery optimization.

Key myQ Features to Enable

After setup, explore these features: auto-close scheduling (set the door to close automatically at a specific time each night), guest access (share control with family members without sharing your password), Amazon Key In-Garage Delivery (available in select Tucson zip codes), and integration with Google Home, Apple HomeKit (via the myQ Home Bridge), and IFTTT.
