How Garage Door Cables Work
Your garage door uses two types of cables that work together with the springs:
Lifting Cables (Torsion System)
These cables run from the bottom bracket on each side of the door up and over the cable drums at the top. When the torsion spring unwinds, it rotates the drums, which wind the cables and lift the door. If one cable breaks, the door drops on that side while the other side stays up — creating a dangerous, jammed condition.
Safety Cables (Extension System)
If your door uses extension springs (mounted along the tracks), safety cables run through the center of each spring. Their sole purpose is to contain the spring if it breaks — preventing it from flying across the garage like a dangerous projectile. If your extension springs don’t have safety cables, this is a critical safety upgrade we can add.
Retaining Cables
Some older systems use retaining cables to keep the door from opening too far. These prevent the door from going past the horizontal position and straining the opener or flying open in high winds.
