Garage Door Roller Replacement: Types, Costs and When to Replace

Garage door rollers are the small wheels that ride inside the vertical and curved tracks on either side of your door. A standard residential garage door has 10–12 rollers (5–6 per side). They bear the full weight of the door — typically 150–250 lbs for a double door — and cycle thousands of times per year. When rollers wear out, the door becomes noisy, jerky, and can even jump off the track.

Replace your rollers if you notice any of the following: the door vibrates or shakes during travel, you hear grinding or scraping sounds, the door hesitates or jerks when opening, rollers wobble visibly on the shaft, the nylon wheel is cracked or chipped, or the door is more than 8–10 years old and rollers have never been replaced.

Residential garage door rollers come in two standard sizes: 2-inch diameter (most common for standard-weight doors) and 3-inch diameter (for heavier insulated and commercial-grade doors). The stem length is typically 4 inches with a 7/16-inch shaft diameter. Measure your existing rollers before ordering replacements — using the wrong size can cause the door to bind or derail.
