The Three Measurements That Define a Torsion Spring
1. Wire Diameter (Gauge)
The thickness of the steel wire the spring is wound from. Measured in decimal inches using a caliper or micrometer. Common residential wire sizes range from .207 inches to .283 inches. Thicker wire = stronger spring = more lifting force. Even a .010-inch difference in wire size dramatically changes the spring’s strength. Never guess the wire size — measure it precisely.
2. Inside Diameter (ID)
The diameter of the hollow center of the spring (the space the torsion shaft runs through). Standard residential torsion springs come in two inside diameters: 1-3/4 inch (most common on standard residential doors) and 2 inch (used on heavier and commercial doors). The spring must match the torsion shaft and cone size on your door.
3. Overall Length
The length of the spring when it is unwound (at rest). Residential torsion springs typically range from 18 to 36 inches long, with some heavy-duty springs exceeding 40 inches. Longer springs distribute stress over more coils, which increases cycle life — but they also require more space above the door.
How to Measure Your Existing Spring
If the spring is intact (not broken), you can measure it while it is still installed:
- Wire diameter: Count 10 coils (or 20 for more accuracy) and measure the total length of those coils with a tape measure. Divide by the number of coils. Example: 20 coils measuring 5.66 inches = .283 inch wire diameter.
- Inside diameter: Measure the inside of the spring coil opening. Standard is 1-3/4″ or 2″.
- Overall length: Measure from one end of the coil to the other, not including the winding cones.
If the spring is broken, you can still measure these dimensions on either half of the broken spring, then add the two lengths together for the total length.
