1. Dead Battery
Wireless keypads run on a 9-volt battery or CR2032 coin cell depending on the model. Battery life is typically 1–2 years. In Tucson’s extreme heat, batteries degrade faster — expect closer to 10–12 months of life during periods of high summer temperatures. If the keypad’s backlight does not illuminate when you press a button, the battery is almost certainly dead. Replace it and test.
2. Keypad Needs Reprogramming
Power surges, lightning strikes, or accidental Learn button presses can erase the keypad’s pairing with the opener. Reprogram it:
- Choose a new 4-digit PIN.
- On the keypad, enter your new PIN and press “Enter” or “Send” (hold it down).
- Within 30 seconds, press the Learn button on the opener motor unit.
- The opener light will flash to confirm the pairing.
If you are using a LiftMaster 877MAX or 878MAX keypad, the process is the same. For older 376LM models, consult your opener manual as the sequence varies slightly.
