Hinges connect each panel of a sectional garage door to the next, allowing the panels to flex at the joints as the door travels along the curved track from vertical to horizontal. A standard residential garage door has 10–14 hinges — two on each end of every panel-to-panel joint, plus one or two center hinges per joint on wider double doors.

What Garage Door Hinges Do

Hinges connect each panel of a sectional garage door to the next, allowing the panels to flex at the joints as the door travels along the curved track from vertical to horizontal. A standard residential garage door has 10–14 hinges — two on each end of every panel-to-panel joint, plus one or two center hinges per joint on wider double doors. They are one of the most overlooked — and most important — hardware components on your garage door.

Types of Garage Door Hinges

Standard Steel Hinges (Gauge 14)

The thinnest and cheapest option. Stamped from 14-gauge galvanized steel. Found on most builder-grade garage doors. Adequate for lightweight, non-insulated doors but tend to wear, squeak, and deform faster than heavier gauges. Replacement cost: $2 – $4 per hinge.

Heavy-Duty Hinges (Gauge 11)

Stamped from thicker 11-gauge steel. The standard for insulated and premium residential doors. Longer lifespan, less flex, and quieter operation than 14-gauge hinges. Replacement cost: $4 – $8 per hinge.

Commercial-Grade Hinges (Gauge 10 or 7)

Built for heavy commercial and oversized residential doors. Thicker steel with wider mounting plates for more bolt contact. Used on RV garage doors, high-cycle commercial doors, and doors exceeding 300 lbs. Replacement cost: $8 – $15 per hinge.

Garage door hinges are numbered 1 through 5 (or higher) based on their position:

  • Hinge #1: Used between the bottom panel and the second panel from the bottom. Has a flat mounting plate because the bottom panel does not need offset.
  • Hinge #2: Between the second and third panels. Slight offset to accommodate the track curve.
  • Hinge #3: Between the third and fourth panels. Greater offset.
  • Hinge #4 and higher: Between upper panels. Maximum offset for the tightest part of the track curve.

Using the wrong hinge number in a position causes binding, misalignment, and premature wear. Always match the hinge number to its position.

When to Replace Hinges

Replace hinges when you see: visible cracks or breaks in the steel, elongated bolt holes (the hinge rocks on its mounting bolts), excessive rust that has weakened the metal, a squealing or grinding noise from hinge joints despite lubrication, or one side of the door sags or gaps at a panel joint.

Hinge Replacement Tips

You can replace most hinges without releasing spring tension — but never remove the bottom bracket hinges, as these are under cable tension. Open the door fully, clamp the track above the lowest roller to prevent the door from sliding, remove the old hinge bolts, and install the new hinge with new carriage bolts if the old holes are elongated.
